The Pivka basin is surrounded by high karst plateaus, Nanos, Hrušica with Trnovski forest and Javorniki. The surface of the plateau is stony, divided by deep sinkholes, drags and spiky peaks. Due to the karst and unfavorable climate, the uninhabited plateaus are covered with beech fir forests.
In the lower part, the Pivka river occasionally flows along Široka dolina/Ravnica. Pivka springs When the Karst is filled with water, its flow lasts around 100 days a year.
We will have breakfast on a touristic farm. We will taste the typical dishes for this landscape. After breakfast, we will visit one of the intermittent (nine) Pivška lakes. From here, we will venture into the heart of the Javorniške forests.
The village of Mašun (1025m) is in the northwestern part of the mountain plateau snowman (with a peak of 1796 m). It is surrounded by vast forests, so initially foresters and hunters settled in this location. Mašun represents the intersection of road connections between municipalities church, , Ilirska Bistrica, , beer and Loška Valley. The district forester will introduce us and bring us closer to a varied life in the Javorniki and Snežniške forests. In particular, we will get to know the life of the brown bear. We will have venison goulash for lunch. A short walk around the area will follow.
We will continue our journey towards Snežnik Castle, which we will also see. Snežnik Castle is one of the few castles in Slovenia that has preserved the original equipment of the last princely family from before the Second World War and is presented as a museum of living culture of the 19th century.
There is still something missing in front of the castle or behind it (some small meal), a tour. Maybe at Majda in Cerknica.
