The lecture ‘with advice on abundant harvest in the garden throughout the year’ we organized the financial support of the municipality of Šmartno pri Litija and it was free for the participants. It took place it was held in the inn Pustov mlin, Cerovica 19, Šmartno pri Litija. The lecture was led by Mrs. Miša Pušenjak, univ. dipl. inž. farmer., specialist in vegetable growing and decorative plants at the Agricultural Forestry Institute in Maribor.
Pušenjakova gave a lot of practical advice and pointed out the mistakes we make when planting and growing vegetables and spices in gardens and fields. She emphasized that we must start with the proper preparation of the soil – plowing, fertilization – Compost. It is very important to choose the correct varieties, early varieties, late varieties, so that we sow them that way. We must also not forget the autochthonous Slovenian varieties that are adapted for our region and our land. These are e.g. Slovenian potato varieties, which are recognizable by the names of our rivers (Mura, Pšata, Sora, Vipava…). She emphasized that the temperature of the soil is very important when planting or sowing, as carrot seeds germinate at 5 degrees for 30 days, and at 15 degrees for 7 days. It is also important for other plants to germinate as soon as possible. She explained the great importance Rots, We do not sow and plant the same plants in the same place for at least three years. She also mentioned plants ‘which are related’ and should not be together as e.g. Spinach and Swiss chard because they grow poorly as a result. In the following, she told several examples of how we naturally control pests and diseases on plants that appear in different periods of growth in gardens and greenhouses. In the end, she emphasized that when we harvest the crops, we must not leave empty beds, fields, but sow plants for green manure, which improve our soil and prevent the growth of weeds.
92 participants from the municipality of Šmartno pri Litija and the municipality of Litija listened to the lecture with interest. This is proof that we are increasingly aware of the importance of growing food at home in the most natural way possible. It is very commendable that there is also a lot of interest among young people who are still gaining experience in this field.
