Herbalist workshop – Breg pri Litija 14.3.2011

On March 14, 2011, a workshop on herbs was held in the fire station in Breg. Monika and Tomaž Mulej from the Hanuman herb farm led a workshop attended by a good number of people from near and far.
In the first part of the workshop, with the help of slides, medicinal plants used for tea mixtures and other preparations that are helpful for various diseases were vividly shown. In addition to well-known plants, many other medicinal plants were also presented, the use and knowledge of which is less widespread. At each pictorial presentation, it was given which part of the plant is collected, at what time of year, what the growing area is, and what are the medicinal properties of the plant and for the treatment of which diseases it is used.
The participants of the workshop had the opportunity to exchange their experiences and get answers to questions about certain plants. The most current questions were the questions, especially where to get medicinal plants that can be planted in the garden, drying method, optimal harvesting time and cutting method.
Lecturer Monika Mulej specifically pointed out the risks associated with drinking certain medicinal teas and the sharing of medicines, as well as the possible unwanted effects of teas in specific medical conditions.
In the second part of the lecture, the principle according to which tea mixtures are prepared according to the active ingredients and taste was presented. The participants, divided into groups, prepared their recipes for tea blends most suitable for certain problems.
To conclude, Tomaž Mulej made Šentjanžev ointment and thus vividly demonstrated the method of making ointments. The participants looked at all the materials used as the basis for ointments and creams and learned about different production processes.
No one went home empty-handed, as Šentjanž’s ointment was given to all workshop participants to see for themselves the advantages of home-made ointments.
In three hours, a lot of proven knowledge was given about medicinal plants, tea mixtures, ointments, tinctures and oils, which they successfully collected in many years and are used with advantage by the Mulej couple from the Hanuman herb farm.
Knowledge of herbs is universally useful and there is no reason why we should not use the green pharmacy, which is accessible to everyone, instead of supporting increasingly expensive over-the-counter pharmaceutical products.
